Subject: Your talk on [topic] at [Conference Name]

Dear Prof. [Name],

I attended your presentation on [title] at [Conference] yesterday. I was particularly intrigued by your finding about [specific result]. It resonated with my own work on [your topic].

One question that came to mind is: [thoughtful question]. I would be grateful for your brief thought.

Separately, I am planning to apply for PhD programs this fall. Your work has been a major inspiration. Might you have openings for new students?

Thank you for an excellent talk.

Best,
[Your Name]

Subject: A thought on your new paper [Paper Title]

Dear Prof. [Name],

Congratulations on your new paper in [Journal]! I read it with great interest.

Your method for [problem] is elegant. I was especially impressed by [specific technique]. I wonder if this technique could be extended to [new context] by [your idea]. I have some preliminary thoughts and would be happy to share if you're interested.

Also, I am currently applying for PhD positions. Does your lab anticipate taking new students next year?

Thank you for your inspiring work.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Subject: Summer reading and a question about [topic]

Dear Prof. [Name],

I hope this message finds you well. I am a [degree] student planning to apply for PhD programs this fall. During my summer reading, I’ve been delving into your papers on [topic].

I have a question about your 2022 paper: [specific question]. I’m trying to understand [concept] and would appreciate your insight.

Also, could you let me know if you plan to accept PhD students for the upcoming cycle? I would love to apply.

Thank you for your time and for your excellent research.

Best,
[Your Name]

Subject: Update: My new paper on [topic] – [Your Name]

Dear Prof. [Name],

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an update: my paper on [title] was just accepted/published in [journal]. It explores [brief finding], which directly extends our previous discussion about [topic].

I've attached the PDF. I would be honored if you have time to glance at it.

I remain very interested in your lab for my PhD. My application will be submitted by [date].

Thank you again for your encouragement.

Best,
[Your Name]

Following up on our summer exchange about [topic], I have now completed my research proposal. I would like to submit my application.”

Subject: A potential extension to your new arXiv paper on federated learning

Dear Dr. Lee,

Congratulations on your new preprint (arXiv:2406.XXXX). I was fascinated by your defense against gradient inversion attacks.

However, I noticed your threat model assumes the adversary has no auxiliary data. In real scenarios, adversaries often have some public data. I ran a quick simulation: adding 10% public data reduced your defense's effectiveness by 23%. I'm attaching a figure.

Would you consider this a meaningful extension for a PhD project? I'm planning to apply this fall and would love to explore this direction under your guidance.

Thank you for your excellent work.

Sincerely,
Zhao

Very interesting observation! Can you send me your simulation code? I have a PhD opening exactly in this area. Let's talk next week.”
